GETTING STARTED

  • Is fundraising compulsory?

Yes, all teams are asked to raise at least $1600 - that's $400 per person - to restore sight. But it's not as hard as you might think! You'll be surprised at how generous your friends and family will be when they learn that you're going to walk up to 100k to raise money to restore sight. You only need 16 friends to give you $25 each and you've done it!

And don't forget, the Coastrek Fundraising team is here to support you the entire way!

A sight restoring operation can cost as little as $25, so the money you raise through Coastrek will make a difference the world can see! In 2013, we hope to raise $1,700,000 - every step you take and every dollar you raise will be contributing to The Foundation's sight restoring work.

Fundraising closes at midday on Tuesday 19 March 2013. Top fundraising teams will be recognised and rewarded with great prizes at the Coastrek Awards Night in March 2013.

It's a good idea to plan your fundraising - reaching your fundraising goal requires some thought and effort, just like your trek training.

  • What if I we don't raise the $1600 fundraising minimum?

Fundraising is a necessary part Coastrek and we do strongly encourage every participant to raise $400 each, however for 2013, we will not be imposing penalties on teams that haven't raised the $1600 by race day. To clarify, The Fred Hollows Foundation will not deduct any money from your credit card or account without your knowledge & express consent as this is completely against our policies.

Rather, the Coastrek Fundraising Team is dedicated to making reaching the $1600 target as simple and as fun as possible and we're here to help you at any time!

You have until the 19th of March 2013 (a couple of weeks after the event) to make the minimum fundraising amount. There are some tips on the website for getting the most out of your fundraising - you might be suprised how easy it is to reach your target!

  • How does fundraising work?

Fundraising for Coastrek is simple and easy! All fundraising for Coastrek is conducted online, so you don't have to worry about handling money or receipts!

Online fundraising is the simplest and most effective way to raise money and restore sight - all with the click of a mouse!

    What is a fundraising page?

A fundraising page is a special website where your friends, family and colleagues can go to make a secure online donation to you with their credit card. Your fundraising page is yours to personalise - you can add a personal message about the amazing Trek you're undertaking to restore sight, you can share images and videos of your training and tell people about your support for The Fred Hollows Foundation.

You can invite anyone to make donations and leave a message of support to you on your page. Your fundraising totals are displayed on your page so everyone can see how close you are to hitting your fundraising targets! Its the best way to tell your friends about the amazing challenge you're taking to Trek Sydney's coastline to restore sight to the needlessly blind!

Through your Coastrek fundraising page, you will be able to

    * Customise your page with photos and videos of you and your team
    * Add a personal message to tell people about your amazing challenge
    * Send emails to your friends and family to sponsor you
    * Keep track of your fundraising results, thank your sponsors and push your fundraising targets higher!

Going mobile - making fundraising even easier!

Got a smart phone? You can keep your page up to date, track your fundraising progress and ask your friends for their support! Download the Coastrek App from the Apple or Android Store and fundraise to restore sight on the go!

  • What do I have to do?

After registration, each Coastrek participant will receive a personal fundraising page where friends and family can go to make a secure online credit card donation toward your Trek to restore sight.

Each team will also have a Team fundraising page controlled by the Team Captain, where your sponsors can see the fundraising total for all four team members.

Teams have until midday on Tuesday 19 March 2013 to help us raise money to restore sight. We've set ourselves the goal to  to raise $1,700,000 through Coastrek 2013 so every step you take and every dollar you raise will bring us closer to reaching our target to end avoidable blindness!

How do I get people to sponsor me?

Once logged into fundraising via your Trekker Account, you'll be able to 'Get Sponsors' - where you can send emails to your contacts asking them to support your Trek. The email will contain a link to your personal fundraising page where they can click to donate online - its that easy!

Through your fundraising page, you'll be able to see which friends you've asked to sponsor you and also which ones have actually made a donation and/or left a message for you on your page. You'll be able to send them a nice thank you email straight from your fundraising account, letting them know the difference they've just made to somebody needlessly blind!

I don't feel comfortable asking my friends for money - is there something else I can do?

Don't like the idea of emailing your friends just to ask them for money? The important thing to remember is that the money being raised through Coastrek is going to the sight restoring work of The Fred Hollows Foundation. You might be surprised how generous people can be when they find out about the amazing challenge you're taking to help eradicate avoidable blindness worldwide!

One technique we've found that works really well is to invite your friends to take up the Coastrek challenge with you! The more people we have participating, the more money we can raise! However, If they refuse because it sounds too hard, ask them if they might consider making a donation to your effort instead. You only need 16 friends to give you $25 each and you've already raised the minimum fundraising target!

Make sure your sponsors know that for as little as $25, they can restore sight to someone who is needlessly blind - which is completely life changing. Most people will be in awe of the inspiring challenge you're undertaking to trek up to 100km, so you'll find that your friends are extremely generous and will be happy to support you!

Don't forget, you can also host a Coastrek fundraising event to supplement your online fundraising and give something back to your sponsors for their generous support!

You can find stories, videos and other fundraising resources here to help you tell your sponsors more about the amazing cause behind your Coastrek!

  • How can I add a cheque donation to my fundraising page?

There are two easy ways to issue receipts to your sponsors.

    • If your sponsors prefer to give you cash and need a receipt, use this offline form to collect the necessary details, then follow the instructions above to 'remit your cash donation online.'  Once you've paid the money in via your fundraising account, an electronic receipt will be automatically emailed to your sponsor.
