Why am I doing this?
I don't have a heart warming story to share. I've never been personally impacted by a lack of access to eye health care. And perhaps that's the point... The only thing that differentiates me from from those people that suffer from preventable blindness is the society into which I was born and the ease at which I can access health care.
Whilst I don't want to launch into a moral tirade about the poverty cycle and foreign aid etc., it's something we fortunate few have become selectively blind to. Third world poverty hasn't been trending since the 80's after all.
The answer here is known. It's not like the problem is so complex that a solution is beyond our grasp. Cataract surgery takes 20 minutes and costs $25.
As a little exercise, I searched all my bank transactions for incidentals >$25 from the past month. There were alot. Now I'm not going to abstain from a lifestyle I have worked hard for, but it is good to reflect. If I had a choice between permanent avoidable blindness and a $25 cafe breakfast, I wouldn't even think about it. Many people in the developing world don't have that choice and I can choose to not be blind to thier plight.
