Coming at you with our first blog post!
So…who we are?
Our team is made up of a bunch of legends, that I was intensely honoured to be asked to join. We all work at Beyond Blue in the Speakers Team, with our desks within a few feet of one another’s.
Kate is an absolute legend, packing loads of empathy and wisdom (she’s the BB old timer amongst us).
Genelle is a beautiful soul - she’s kind, extremely thoughtful and a great listener.
Dan is an unsung hero with a huge heart, trustable with your life and biggest fears.
And me, I’d say I’m most notable known for being exceedingly excited, real (always down for an open office cry) and passionate.
What the shizzle is The Hero’s Journey?
The team we work in is all about helping people share their story. Our team name, The Hero’s Journey, is derived from the well-known storytelling structure, from The Hero with a Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell, which is explored in the Ted-Ed talk ‘What makes a hero?’ By Matthew Winkler:
In this beautifully animated video, The Heroes’ Journey is outlined as a cycle in which the individual faces a challenge and departs the status quo of their usual life.
They enter into an unknown realm, where they face testing trials, crisis and even their biggest fear and absolute darkest hours. They utilise the valuable assistance from others, battle through these trying experiences and finally emerge the winner. They reach their treasure and result and return to the ordinary world, reborn.
Resolution has been achieved (WEEHOO!) and although status quo is once again in place, they are not the same person they were before their endeavour into the realm of challenging unknowns and tests of inner endurance and resilience.
They are upgraded to a new level of being and understanding of themselves and their life purpose. Beholding the true treasure of the terrifying yet beautiful cycle of hope, recovery and resilience.
We found this to be immensely powerful and relatable. Not only to our own experiences of adversity and growth, but also to that of all the amazing Beyond Blue Speakers who we are very inspired and moved by. Beyond Blue Speakers share their personal to reduce stigma and reminder others they are never alone in their hero’s journey.
Why do you keep spamming your socials with the Coastrek page link Amy? 
There are a myriad of reasons why we are doing Coastrek. But if I was to summarise it into one word I would have to say its connection.
We are already enjoying working together mapping out Coastrek plans and having fun for a great cause. We are super pumped to enjoy being out amongst nature, having fun as a team and connecting with other awesome coast trekkers and challenging ourselves physically in a positive way.
But ultimately, the heart of our why comes down to allowing all Australians to be connected to someone when they are facing their trials, challenges and darkest hours. All the money we raise goes directly towards Beyond Blue’s support service. Just one donation of $49 ensures that a call to the support service is answered, and a hero on their journey can receive the meaningful assistance they need to continue on.
That’s something we will gladly accept some blisters and sore legs for.
