For the love of Nard - our story
On September 17th 2018, my big sister of 17months lost her battle with breast cancer and the complications that go with it.
She was a bit a super woman really.
Beautiful but didn’t act like it.
So incredibly smart but never condescending.
Always kind and calm.
Mother of four gorgeous kids and managed everything with ease.
Extremely passionate about building communities.
So when the breast cancer metastasised in July last year, we were braced for another battle. It was a hard slog for her but it got the better of her in September.
I took it pretty badly.
I miss her terribly.
I needed some way to feel like she was near.
In Nadine’s last days, we made a list of the things we were going to do when she was well enough. Many things on the list including hiking, family holidays or long camping trips somewhere she had always loved.
Nard was also a Orthoptist. She studied at La Trobe University many years ago, and learned about the work that Fred Hollows has done. He was a huge inspiration to her.
So when the chance to do Coastrek came up on facebook, it seemed like it was made for us. There was no question about it!
And registered, I did! Team name: ‘For The Love of Nard’
I am lucky enough to have many beautiful friends and family that also want to share this, and we have two teams of four, including my brother Nathan, high school best friends Sarah and Kristy, and dear great friends Kaddy, Emily, Yvonne and Shaun. We have had so much support, from friends and family of all involved – the community is strong, and even now Nadine keeps bringing people together!
We are all excited to do this, not only for the pilgrimage with Nadine, but to be raising money for such an incredible cause of restoring sight to those that are unable to afford treatments. So proud – and I know Nard will be walking along with us. Thanks for the opportunity!
