Reached my fundraising goal
Ashton, Eleisa, Casey and I have entered the Coastrek team challenge and will be trekking 60km from Parsons Beach to Goolwa on Friday 20 September to raise funds for Beyond Blue to support mental health and wellbeing in Australia.
Because right now, over one million people in Australia have depression and more than two million are experiencing anxiety. On average, eight people take their lives every day in Australia.
Also because on a personal level, the trek will be a huge physical and mental challenge but it's not just the walking that will be challenging. In December 2018, I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis: a chronic and incurable autoimmune disease that causes a number of persistent physical symptoms. With the support of Richard, my loving family and friends, and my wonderful colleagues I was able to continue with the most exciting time of my professional career even while being in a constant search for the closest toilet. Walking 60km in one day is the next frontier.
In reading about the condition, I found out that patients with Colitis and Crohns are at high risk of psychological distress, especially anxiety and depression, with increased rates during disease flares. I remember telling Richard while I was particularly sick to just leave me by the side of the road, and I meant it. I felt like I couldn't go on and I was tired of feeling like a burden.
So, I'm taking on this challenge to help Beyond Blue deliver programs and services that make a difference in the lives of people affected by mental health conditions, including those with Colitis and Crohns who feel like they want to be left by the side of the road - and I would really appreciate your support.
