My Story...

Most people know I've had some issues along the way with my mental health. This is why I wanted to join Coastrek and raise money for Beyond Blue.

Almost 5 years ago I was diagnosed with cervical cancer. I was lucky that my cancer could be removed through major surgery and without any radiation or chemo treatment required. I didn't feel lucky though. About 8 months after my surgery I had my first follow up testing, I was anxious in the lead up but expected once I got the all clear I would feel better. The only problem was I felt worse. I took a few days off work because I couldn't leave the house through panic. I started to worry about my health constantly, every sensation in my body was a catostrophic health event about to happen. I was tense, exhausted and felt like I was living on the verge of a panic attack. I was diagnosed with health anxiety. Seeing a psychologist helped me so much.

Around 2 years ago our beautiful daughter was born. She was so wanted. We didn't know if I would be able to fall pregnant or or successfully carry a baby to term. I expected to feel a bit of baby blues and some low mood. What I didn't expect was to feel hopeless and lost. I also felt guilty for not being totally in love with my new life as a Mum of two. I was able to ask for help and was diagnosed with post natal depression and trauma from my cancer journey and birth experience. Once again the help of a psychologist was vital to me being able to work through my feelings. I also found out how important self care was to my mental health..time with friends, exercise, eating well and resting.

I was lucky I was able to ask for and access help. Not everyone has the privilege or the ability.

Beyond Blue provide help and support to help everyone achieve their best possible mental health. 3 million Australians live with anxiety and depression.

I’m taking on Sydney Coastrek!

On Friday 4 September, I'll be taking part in Sydney Coastrek, the ultimate team trekking and fundraising challenge, proudly supporting Beyond Blue.

I've had my own struggles with anxiety and depression which is why I decided to take part in Coastrek 2020
