I've Done Seven Coastreks. This Is What Gets Me Over The Finish Line.

The thought of doing the 60km Coastrek challenge is daunting for most people. But imagine doing the 100km Trailwalker in the same year and then signing up for another Coastrek? Sinead Motherway is that special kind of Wild Woman, and she loves signing herself up for events that push her mental and physical boundaries.

When she walks the 60km Sydney Coastrek challenge from Palm Beach to Mosman in March, she'll have done her 8th Coastrek event. So what keeps her coming back? And how does she get through those moments on the trail when she's ready to give up?

You’ve done Coastrek seven times including in Melbourne this year. Plus, you've done the 100km Oxfam Trailwalker several times. What kept you going when the walks got tough?

Long distance events are a physical, psychological and social challenge. My goal is to get a team of four to the finish line, uninjured and still friends. You need a good training schedule and a team that’s willing to commit to training. When the going gets tough, I tell a teammate. I've had some very supportive teammates in the past. And have some food and Schnapps 5km before the finish. You may not feel like it, but it works wonders for morale!

What are five pieces of kit you always take on a hike?

I always have a first-aid kit, hand sanitiser, a hanky, a hat, a buff and sunscreen. If I’m organised, I'll also have my cup, a raincoat, a towel and trekking poles.

When was the last time you got out of your comfort zone?

The last time I was out of my comfort zone was doing the 100km Oxfam Trailwalker in August. By the time you hit the pavement at 90km, it’s a drag to the finish. Everyone is tired and feeling pain. You just have to stick together and nut it out as a team.

What’s the best hiking advice you ever received?

Good quality trekking socks are just as important as boots and trail runners.

What do you love about being a Wild Woman?

I love the camaraderie of Trek Training with Wild Women. I have always enjoyed the outdoors but I particularly enjoy talking, learning and sharing the experience and various challenges with like-minded women.
