Five Creative Rituals To Start Your Morning Right

Ask pretty much any uber-successful person about their morning rituals and you’ll get a variation on the same thing. Get up early. Meditate. Exercise. Journal. Write goals. While we think all these options are epic and totally worthwhile, we’ve got also got some more creative and fun ways to create a healthy morning routine. Here’s some healthy things to do every morning:

1. Dance

Dancing is one of the most underrated ways to start the day. Whether you ease into it with some gentle movements and stretches or crank the hip hop and really shake it out, dancing around your bedroom will wake you up faster than a shot of espresso… and it’s a LOT more fun.

Music is also a known mood booster, so it’s a perfect way to get some physical activity early in the day. Turn on the tunes as soon as you get out of bed and dance your way into a good morning.

2. Watch the sunrise

Watching the sunrise is an amazing morning ritual for a number of reasons. Not only does it provide a compelling reason to get out of bed, it also produces serotonin, one of your “feel good” hormones, which makes you feel relaxed, energised and positive. Plus, if you get up in time to watch the sunrise, chances are you’ll have a couple of hours before work to get some other healthy morning habits ticked off.

3. Go for a walk

Walking is the perfect type of exercise for early mornings, because it doesn’t feel too hard or painful, but is one of the best things you can do for your mental and physical health. Some of the benefits include improved fitness, mood, resilience and longevity, stronger muscles and bones, reduced risk of heart disease and stroke, improved balance… the list goes on.

4. Jump in the ocean (or some other cold water!)

There’s plenty of evidence which proves immersion in cold water is really great for your health, both physical and mental. Cold water helps reduce swelling and inflammation in the body, which relieves pain and promotes healing. It also helps increase production of beta-endorphins, which contribute to a sense of wellbeing. Plus, jumping in cold water first thing will make you feel alive in a way nothing else does. Try it.

5. Hang out with friends

Most of us reserve our social time for weekends, but catching up with a friend before work can be an excellent healthy morning ritual. Adding some socialising in the morning can get you out of that work-sleep-repeat routine, and send you into the day with a spring in your step. If you don’t have time for a full pre-work catchup, try getting to work 20 minutes early and grabbing a sit-down coffee with your colleagues.

When you put that all together, here’s what your healthy morning routine looks like:

  1. Set the alarm half an hour before sunrise, turn on the music, and dance your way out of bed.
  2. Meet a friend at sunrise somewhere beautiful and take a moment or two to really enjoy it.
  3. Walk together. Enjoy the delightful morning while catching up.
  4. Jump in the ocean/lake/river. (Or you could just have a cold shower when you get home!)
  5. Head home feeling smug, buzzed and ready to take on the day!
